Server Randomly Stops Working
« on: August 15, 2017, 05:46:25 am »
Hello,
Am looking for ideas to solve a server problem our club has had for quite a while. We are currently using Windows 7 and the RCForb server is 0.7.6292.15806.  The problem is that every few days the server shuts itself down, and we get the "RCForb server has stopped working" message on the screen. Other running programs are not affected. I previously turned off Window's ability to shut down power to USB ports thinking that might help, but we still get frequent instances of the server closing, with no apparent reason. Any thoughts on what to check?  I don't see anything suspicious in the Windows event viewer, although some of that is sort of cryptic.  I don't have to reboot the computer to get the server back...I just restart the server itself and all is fine for several more days.

Since the server seems to run many hours just fine, I would look to see if you have an RFI issue.

Look in the Windows Event Viewer (Application Logs) and see if those times coordinate with someone transmitting (activity logs in the server) on the remote.

Roger,
Is the console display information saved anywhere, perhaps in a text file?  That may help me troubleshoot. Because the server is closing randomly with no association with RF, I can't view what was displayed in the console immediately prior to the server closing.

Unfortunately the console text isn't saved anywhere.

I did notice your server is a bit out of date, try downloading the newest.

Try running the Microsoft .NET repair tool

If you can find the error in the Event Viewer, you should be able to copy and paste the General Info on the event here. It may give us a hint. It may be cryptic to you but it may give me a hint.

What kind of radio are you using?

Are you using a USB to Serial cable? If so, stay away from ones using a Prolific chipset, use one with a FTDI chipset. Make sure it's not something as simple as a loose cable, a worn sloppy USB socket on the computer, etc.
